A Feast of Mercy: Celebrating Community and Growth

"The well-being of mankind, its peace and security, are unattainable unless and until its unity is firmly established."

What a joy it was to gather together this past Sunday for our Nineteen Day Feast, marking the beginning of the month of Rahmat—Mercy. As friends arrived at our beautifully prepared Farida's and David's place, there was a palpable sense of anticipation and warmth that filled the space.

A Circle of Unity

Looking around the room as we settled into our circle, one couldn't help but be moved by the beautiful diversity of ages, backgrounds, and experiences represented. From the youngest participants sitting cross-legged on the ornate carpet, surrounded by colourful toys and the gentle hum of conversation, to our more seasoned community members sharing stories and wisdom, the gathering embodied the Bahá'í vision of unity in diversity.

The atmosphere was one of genuine connection - friends catching up, children playing freely whilst adults engaged in meaningful consultation, and the easy flow of conversation that speaks to the bonds of spiritual kinship that unite us. In one corner, we could see the next generation at play, their laughter adding a note of pure joy to our devotional space.

Celebrating Growth and Commitment

A particularly moving moment came when we celebrated young Noah's milestone - reaching his fifteenth birthday and formally declaring his faith. The Local Spiritual Assembly presented him with a book to mark this significant step in his spiritual journey, and he also received a special letter from the National Spiritual Assembly, acknowledging his commitment to the path of service.

Witnessing a young person embrace the principles of the Faith with such sincerity reminds us all of the importance of nurturing the spiritual development of our youth. Noah's declaration represents not just a personal milestone, but a gift to our entire community as we welcome another committed soul into our circle of service.

Reflections on Coherent Living

During our consultation, we reflected on guidance from the Universal House of Justice about leading coherent lives, where our economic choices align with our spiritual principles. The words resonated deeply: "Every choice a Bahá'í makes—as employee or employer, producer or consumer, borrower or lender, benefactor or beneficiary—leaves a trace, and the moral duty to lead a coherent life demands that one's economic decisions be in accordance with lofty ideals."

This Holy Attribute of God of Mercy (Rahmat) seemed particularly relevant as we considered how our daily choices can be expressions of compassion and justice, contributing to the material and spiritual prosperity of our community and the wider world.

The Spirit of Fellowship

As the afternoon unfolded, the warmth of fellowship permeated every corner of our gathering space. Whether engaged in quiet conversation, sharing refreshments, or simply enjoying each other's company, there was a sense that we were participating in something greater than ourselves ; the gradual building of a new kind of community based on spiritual principles.

The images from our gathering tell the story beautifully: friends of all ages coming together in harmony, children playing freely in a space where they are cherished and valued, and adults engaged in the kind of meaningful dialogue that builds both individual character and collective capacity for service.

Looking Forward

As we concluded our Feast and prepared to disperse back to our individual lives and responsibilities, there was a renewed sense of purpose and connection. The month of Rahmat stretches before us as an invitation to embody this divine quality in all our interactions, whether in our families, workplaces, or broader community.

We are grateful for these regular opportunities to come together, to consult on matters of mutual concern, to celebrate milestones in our spiritual journey, and to strengthen the bonds of fellowship that make our community a source of hope and inspiration.

To those who joined us, thank you for contributing to the beautiful spirit of our gathering. To those who were unable to attend, know that you were remembered in our prayers and conversations, and we look forward to welcoming you at our next Feast.

The Bahá'í community of Dundee holds activities regularly, and all are welcome to join us for devotions, fellowship, and meaningful conversation. If you're interested in learning more about our community activities, please visit our website or contact us directly.

"Be generous in prosperity, and thankful in adversity. Be worthy of the trust of thy neighbour, and look upon him with a bright and friendly face."  - Bahá'u'lláh
