On Saturday, 29th November, members of the Dundee Bahá'í community travelled to Aberdeen to participate in a special memorial gathering marking the centenary of Dr John Ebenezer Esslemont's passing. The event, held at Cults Kirk Centre, brought together Bahá'ís and friends to commemorate this remarkable Scottish Bahá'í whose book Bahá'u'lláh and the New Era has introduced countless souls to the Faith across the globe.

Dr Esslemont, who lived from 1874 to 1925, was a physician and scholar who dedicated his life to service. Titled 'Hand of the Cause of God', he made his final pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where he spent his last days in devoted service before passing away on 22nd November 1925—exactly one hundred years before this gathering.

The evening began with an illuminating presentation tracing Dr Esslemont's journey from his early years in Aberdeen to his spiritual transformation and literary achievements. A particularly moving aspect was the presence of Dr Esslemont's great-grand nephew Alan Esslemont accompanied by his granddaughter, who generously shared treasured family artefacts. Attendees were privileged to view original prints of Bahá'u'lláh and the New Era, personal letters, historic photographs, A box on the table contained slides from a stereoscopic camera, revealing another of Dr Esslemont's interests and a box containing precious family documents. These tangible connections brought history vividly to life.

Following the presentation, we gathered for refreshments. Some of us also strolled along Esslemont Avenue, the street named in his honour, feeling a profound connection to Aberdeen's Bahá'í heritage.

Dr Esslemont's dedication to sharing the Bahá'í message continues to inspire believers worldwide, in an enduring legacy of service.
