On a crisp December day, Bahá'ís from across Tayside, Fife and Aberdeenshire gathered for their annual Unit Convention, bringing together friends from these areas. The event, held in the University of Dundee Chaplaincy Centre, exemplified the spirit of consultation and fellowship central to Bahá'í community life.

A Unit Convention is an important gathering where Bahá'ís come together to elect a delegate who will represent their region at the National Convention. This year's event saw strong participation, with approximately two-thirds of eligible voters taking part through in-person attendance, postal ballots, and even remote connection via Zoom.

The day unfolded smoothly through its various stages: prayers opened the gathering, officers were elected to guide proceedings, and the election itself was conducted by secret ballot in a prayerful atmosphere. Canvassing is not allowed and participants elect only those who can best combine the necessary qualities of unquestioned loyalty, of selfless devotion, of a well-trained mind, of recognised ability and mature experience. The elected delegate will participate in the National Convention in April 2026, where they will take part in the election of the National Assembly of the Baha'is of the United Kingdom, which comprises nine members.

Whilst adults consulted on matters concerning community development, separate activities for children and junior youth took place. The gathering also provided space for reflection on a letter from the Bahá'í Council for Scotland to our Convention which emphasised the importance of learning, action and community building in these challenging times.

Throughout the day, simple hospitality, hot soup, sandwiches, tea, coffee, fruits and sweet treats nourished both body and spirit.

Such gatherings remind us that building a better world begins with coming together, consulting with respect, and serving with unity.
